These two get compared because both are free to start, both are cheap to pay for, and both build landing pages and send automated emails. They are different products wearing the same price. MailerLite is an email tool with a page builder attached. Systeme.io is a funnel-and-course platform with an email tool inside. The question that decides it is whether the list exists to sell something you deliver yourself.
Pricing at realistic list sizes
At the time of verification (2026-09-09), both free plans never expire, and they cap different things. MailerLite's free plan allows 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, with 3 automations, 3 forms, 1 landing page, 1 website and 2 seats. Systeme.io's free plan allows 2,000 contacts and unlimited emails, with 3 funnels, 1 automation rule, 1 workflow, 1 custom domain, 1 course, 1 blog and 1 community, and no transaction fees on sales.
At 500 subscribers, MailerLite needs Comfort at $12 a month ($10.80 annual) for 500 subscribers, 5,000 emails, 50 automations, 10 sites and landing pages and logo removal. Systeme.io is still free. At 2,000 contacts, MailerLite's Comfort tier price rises with the list, while Systeme.io hits its free cap and needs Startup at $17 a month for 5,000 contacts, 10 funnels and 10 automation rules. At 5,000 contacts both are paying: Systeme.io Startup at $17, MailerLite Comfort at a higher band, and MailerLite's Power tier at $25 for 500 subscribers with unlimited emails, seats and automations scales the same way.
The count that matters is not contacts but automations. MailerLite gives 3 free and 50 on Comfort. Systeme.io gives 1 free and 10 on Startup. A business with a welcome sequence, a cart reminder and a re-engagement flow is inside MailerLite's free plan and outside Systeme.io's. A creator with one sequence that ends on an offer is fine on either, and Systeme.io's higher contact cap keeps that creator free for longer.
Feature depth
MailerLite's depth is in the email. A fast drag-and-drop editor, designed templates, a visual automation builder that non-designers use without help, forms, pop-ups, landing pages, a simple website builder and light commerce for selling a download. It integrates with the mainstream stack and, through Tally or a native form, captures leads from any site. Its automation logic is simpler than ActiveCampaign or Klaviyo and its e-commerce integrations are shallower than the store-first tools, but for a newsletter or a service business the editor and the deliverability are the reasons to pick it.
Systeme.io's depth is around the email. Funnels with order bumps, a checkout with no transaction fees, a course area, a membership community, a blog, an affiliate program for your own product, and email broadcasts and sequences that tag contacts as they move. The email editor is plainer, templates are basic, and native integrations are fewer, so anything outside its own funnel-email-course loop needs a connector. The free sales funnel guide builds the whole thing on the free plan.
Ease of use
Both score high. MailerLite's setup, editor and automation builder are straightforward with almost nothing to configure, which is why it is the usual first email tool. Systeme.io's editors are clear and its plan limits are stated plainly; the learning curve is in the funnel and course layers, which MailerLite does not have. If the only thing you want is to send a good-looking email on Tuesday, MailerLite is faster to that point.
Exit cost
Low on MailerLite: subscribers, tags and a handful of automations export and rebuild in an afternoon. Higher on Systeme.io if you used the platform: the funnels, the course content, the checkout and the affiliate program all live there, and leaving means moving a store, not a list. That is the price of the free all-in-one, and it is worth knowing before the course goes in.
Scenario by scenario
A consultant sending a monthly newsletter to 800 clients and prospects: MailerLite Comfort at $12. The email is the product and the editor is the reason.
A coach selling a $300 program with a lead magnet, a three-email sequence and a checkout: Systeme.io free. Every piece is included, and the funnel builder for coaches guide sets out when the paid builders add anything.
A local business with a welcome sequence, a review request and a re-engagement flow: MailerLite. Three automations free, fifty on Comfort; Systeme.io's single free rule cannot run three.
A creator with 1,500 subscribers and no product yet: Systeme.io free, because MailerLite would cost $12 at that size and Systeme.io stays free to 2,000. Move the sequence to MailerLite later if the product never comes and the email quality starts to matter.
A store on Shopify: neither. The email software for Shopify beginners guide covers the tools that read store data.
What neither does well
Neither is an automation engine; branching, behaviour-based workflows are ActiveCampaign's job, and the ActiveCampaign vs Brevo comparison covers that tier. Neither texts. And neither is the right home for a large list that mails rarely, where Brevo's unlimited contacts win on price.
